But after the initial surprise of seeing them, as I'd never seen bears out here before, I began to wonder how far these animals had been traveling in their search for food.
With the worst drought on record, and terrible fires that have wiped out their homes too, it's been a very hard year for bears. 158 have had to be euthanized in New Mexico, cause they've been too close to human habitation more than twice, and hundreds relocated. Many, probably including these two, won't make it thru the winter.
I would have liked to empty out my fridge to feed them, but I know that doesn't really help, and would keep them coming back to an area from which they would ultimately be either driven out or forcibly removed.
It makes me sad that the world is becoming such a hard place ... for everyone.
