It is, however, the best way to live if you need to come up with designs for any kind of artwork, or are, as I am now, engaged in creative writing.
So now I'm getting estimates for the printing, thinking about people or organizations I can approach who might write blurbs to add to the back of the book, and researching who might review the book after publication. My other big issue is how to raise the money for all this. Normally I would have the funds myself, and just be able to go full steam ahead. Unfortunately, the economic downturn of the last few years has wiped out my savings and put me into modest debt—not a great place from which to start if you're looking at an upcoming expense of $10-15 thousand dollars.
It does offer me the opportunity to deal with some of my issues of self-putdown, though. How lucky for me! I may have to (at least) approach friends and family to buy a copy of the book, pre-publication, to get the money to print! But maybe that's the point—when I have to go out and do workshops to sell the book, I'd better be able to sell myself.
