This is an election year, and brother, do I HATE listening to ads that promote one candidate or another. It's all for show. No matter who gets in, the same people are running everything behind the scenes—they just have a slightly easier time of it with one party over the other. Meanwhile, the candidates all bash each other in public, then turn around and attend some extravagant party together at our expense.
The Romans coined the idea of "Bread and Circuses," and they really got it right. After a couple of thousand years, those who require power have just gotten better at keeping the populace happy, giving us all-you-can-eat junk food, and confrontational "circuses," be they politics or professional sports.
